SCHOTT to introduce the CONTURAN® Tough AS at the “electronica” trade fair
SCHOTT is excited to introduce CONTURAN® Tough AS at the “electronica” trade fair as an alternative for mechanically stressed display glazing.
Two letters, one big difference: AS stands for aluminosilicate glass. With this basic substrate, the SCHOTT technology group is not only expanding its range of anti-reflective CONTURAN® glasses, but also its list of positive properties. CONTURAN® Tough AS is 50 percent more break-resistant than comparable hardened float glass and is thinner and more lightweight. At the electronica trade fair from the 13th to 16th of November 2018 in Munich, display manufacturers can find out more exciting details about the new product (Hall B4, Stand 246).
Displays that are used outdoors, in industrial environments, and for medical or touch applications are often subject to higher loads. Even toughened float glass sometimes cannot withstand such increased demands or is not able to offer the desired safety. At this point, CONTURAN® Tough AS is recommended as a suitable solution. The AS substrate of the cover glass provides high mechanical stability and increases the break and impact strength by around 50 percent compared to chemically toughened soda-lime float glass.
The glass has also been optimized for chemical tempering. It is the only glass of its kind that allows this increase in strength in the SCHOTT process chain through the anti-reflective layer. Even with these desirable properties, the substrate thickness is only 2.1 millimeters (mm).
High anti-reflection coating, long service life and durability
At the same time, CONTURAN® Tough AS, like the entire product line, features the proven anti-reflection coating from SCHOTT. Even under difficult lighting conditions, this ensures optimum visibility of display contents and reduces reflection by more than 90 percent to less than 1 percent. Applied using the sol-gel dipping process, the coating is proven to be extremely scratch-resistant and resistant to abrasion or chemicals, as well as easy to clean.
Display manufacturers can have the newly introduced protective glass customized. Various processing options are available, from screen printing and lamination to easy-to-clean or anti-fingerprint coating. This makes the glass suitable for applications such as high-resolution displays (4K/8K) that integrate touch functions, for Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems, medical, mobile, or outdoor applications.
